MB and MiB are not the same: decimal units count in 1000s, binary units in 1024s.

Download time calculator
How long a file takes at a given connection speed, assuming the speed holds the whole time.
Estimated download time
1 min 20 s
80 seconds
Real downloads are usually 5โ15% slower because of network overhead and server limits.
Data you can move at this speed
- Per minute
- 750 MB ยท 715.26 MiB
- Per hour
- 45 GB ยท 41.91 GiB
- Per day
- 1.08 TB ยท 1,005.83 GiB
Exact answers
Conversions use exact whole-number maths, so 1 GiB is exactly 1,073,741,824 bytes โ no rounding noise.
MB and MiB, clearly
Decimal (1000) and binary (1024) units are shown side by side, so you can see why a 1 TB drive shows 931 GB.

Storage and bandwidth units, explained
Computers count in two different ways. Drive makers, internet providers and macOS use decimal (SI) units, where every step is 1000. Windows, RAM and many programs use binary (IEC) units, where every step is 1024 โ but often still label them KB, MB and GB. This converter keeps the two apart: MB always means 1,000,000 bytes and MiB always means 1,048,576 bytes.
Storage units
- 1 byte (B) = 8 bits
- Decimal: 1 KB = 1,000 B ยท 1 MB = 1,000 KB ยท 1 GB = 1,000 MB ยท 1 TB = 1,000 GB
- Binary: 1 KiB = 1,024 B ยท 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB ยท 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB ยท 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB
- A โ1 TBโ drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is about 931 GiB โ that is why your computer shows less space than the box promised.
Internet speed: Mbps vs MB/s
Internet packages are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), but browsers and download managers show megabytes per second (MB/s). Since one byte is 8 bits, divide by 8: a 100 Mbps connection downloads at most 12.5 MB/s, and a 20 Mbps package at most 2.5 MB/s.
How download time is calculated
time (seconds) = file size in bits รท speed in bits per second. For example, a 1 GB file (8,000,000,000 bits) on a 100 Mbps line takes 80 seconds; a 1 GiB file takes about 86 seconds. Real downloads are a little slower because of network overhead, Wi-Fi quality and server limits.
Time units
The time converter goes from nanoseconds to weeks โ handy for API timeouts, cache lifetimes and benchmark results. 1 hour = 3,600,000 ms.
