Markdown is a simple way to format text with plain characters β€” **bold**, # Heading, - list itemβ€” that converts cleanly to HTML. It's used for GitHub READMEs, documentation, notes apps, forums and many blogging platforms.

Supported syntax

  • Headings (H1–H6), paragraphs and line breaks
  • Bold, italic, strikethrough and inline code
  • Ordered, unordered and task lists
  • Fenced code blocks
  • Tables with column alignment
  • Blockquotes, horizontal rules, links, images and footnotes

Good to know

  • Line breaks:with β€œLine breaks as <br>” on, a single newline starts a new line (like GitHub comments). Turn it off to match how GitHub renders README files.
  • Raw HTML is not rendered: HTML tags inside your Markdown are shown as plain text, and unsafe links (like javascript:) are removed, so pasted content can't run scripts.
  • Code blocks are shown in a monospace font without colour syntax highlighting.
  • Downloaded HTML is a single self-contained file with light and dark styles built in β€” no external stylesheets.

Common uses

  • Drafting and checking a README before pushing to GitHub
  • Writing documentation, notes and blog posts
  • Formatting project reports or assignment write-ups
  • Turning Markdown into HTML for a website or email
